Serious error

COMMENT

The government committed a serious error Wednesday. Instead of accepting the Council of State verdict and turning the page, it chose to condemn the ruling - and in highly populist way, at that.

It is clear that it is continuing on the same path of trying to manipulate Justice and conducting itself in a way which lead to Wednesday’s ruling. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras ought to understand that this road leads to a dead-end, that the frenzied effort to control institutions at all costs will boomerang on him.

The ruling is important not only because the majority of judges found the government’s auction of four national TV licenses unconstitutional. It is important also in that the hearings were held because a majority did not agree with their president’s argument not to hear the issue – a victory for the institution.
