Dispute between government and ND shifts to candidate for head of media watchdog

The dispute between the government and the main opposition New Democracy continued on Monday with ND insisting on opposing the government's proposal of the rightwing veteran Vyron Polydoras to head the National Broadcasting Council (ESR).

During a meeting with President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Monday scheduled for noon ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to underline his opposition to the proposal and his more general concern about the upheaval over the government's controversial auction of television licenses, which was rejected last week by the Council of State.

Later in the day, at 5 p.m., Parliament Speaker Nikos Voutsis is to hold a meeting with all the House speakers and deputy speakers to discuss the matter of convening the ESR which, the Council of State deemed, is the only authority that can award TV licenses.
