OPINION

Transparent trickery

The citizens of this country are perfectly capable of making the distinction between genuine efforts to seek political consensus and fancy fireworks designed to mislead public opinion and simply create the impression that agreement is being sought.

This is something that the government should not forget, especially during its successive efforts to paper over its own mistakes in hope that they would go away.

To give an example, right now it is obvious that the government is trying to split the opposition camp by pandering to forces on the right of the political spectrum that had agreed with some of its positions back when leftist SYRIZA was still in the opposition.

Times, however, have changed, and the people are no longer as gullible as they may have once been, despite their desperation.

The bottom line is that Greece is in desperate need of consensus on the important issues, not tricks that lead to nothing but more confusion.
