Teachers join pupils for anti-austerity protest

The union representing secondary school teachers (OLME) is to support a rally on Monday being organized by pupils protesting cutbacks in education as part of the government's austerity policies.

Teachers were to join pupils outside the main entrance to Athens University at noon before joining a protest march. The teachers are holding a three-hour work stoppage ending at 2 p.m.

Protesters are demanding hirings to fill teaching gaps at schools and oppose plans to merge or abolish school departments as part of belt-tightening plans.
