Another fire at Chios camp following migrant unrest

There were concerns about the situation at a migrant reception center on Chios on Thursday after a brawl on the premises led to unidentified arsonists setting fire to tents, the second blaze at the facility in a month.

The unrest started on Wednesday evening after an Iranian migrant allegedly assaulted a female compatriot, causing her serious injuries.

The alleged assailant and another two male migrants subsequently started smashing the windows of the containers housing staff who manage the facility.

The fire broke out shortly afterward, burning several tents but causing no injuries.

The fire service and riot police intervened and managed to douse the blaze and restore calm but there were fears about residual tensions in the camp, which is overcrowded.

Local residents are also losing patience with the situation at the camp and have called on the government to shut it down.
