Centrist Potami loses an MP as Markou departs

TAGS: Politics

Centrist Potami was left with eight MPs in Greece's 300-seat Parliament on Monday after the deputy Katerina Markou announced her departure from the party, complaining at the refusal of leader Stavros Theodorakis to cooperate with other parties.

In a letter to Theodorakis, Markou announced her withdrawal and said she would be standing as an independent MP.

"The moment demands a realistic examination of the situation as society is on its knees and, and every single reservation as regards political alliances and collaborations, wherever they may come from, appears of little significance as the country's survival is at stake," she said.

She added that she had been "suffocating" in Potami and that her continuation as an independent MP expressed what her constituents wanted.
