Wrong message

COMMENT

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s dogged insistence on continuing to bring up and attempt to cast doubt on the Lausanne Treaty signed in 1923 – an agreement which defined the borders of the modern Turkish Republic, including those it shares with Greece – is having a rather destabilizing effect.

The aforementioned treaty has to a considerable degree contributed to maintaining peace and stability in a region which had up until then seen numerous wars and crises dating back to ancient times.

Right now, what is truly unfortunate is that the kind of revisionist references being made by President Erdogan have received no comment from the governments of our European partners, the United States or other powerful players in the international political arena.

As a result, what is happening is that the wrong message is being sent out at the wrong time.
