Prosecutor seeks acquittals in Giakoumakis suicide trial

The prosecutor in the trial of the 2015 death of Vangelis Giakoumakis in the northwestern city of Ioannina has recommended the acquittal of a former director of the school where the student was studying and the head of the dorm where he was staying, who were facing charges of negligence, as well as Christos Markoyiannakis, a former deputy minister who was accused of trying to protect the students who are alleged to have beaten and bullied the 20-year-old.

The former school director and the dorm head were accused of failing to respond to reports that he was being victimized and that the abuse prompted him to take his own life. Markoyiannakis, a New Democracy MP, admitted that he did call the school director on behalf of the family of one of the students accused of bullying the victim, but insisted that he did not try to use his influence.
