A clear message to Turkey

Over the past few months, Turkey has been raising issues that effectively question fundamental treaties and put stability – and even peace – in the wider region at risk.

It does not make much difference here in Greece if Turkey’s behavior is targeted at domestic consumption or if it is aimed at serving the country’s long-term geopolitical strategies.

We have seen many times in the past that crises can escalate just because they developed an uncontrollable dynamic of their own.

Athens must respond to this challenge with caution as well as determination.

That said, what has been sorely missing so far is a clear message to Turkey from Greece’s European partners and allies, the United States and other traditional friends, to make it clear that Ankara’s revisionist gestures are totally out of line.
