Ex-ministers set to spearhead effort for revival of center-left

Former PASOK ministers are gearing up for a new attempt to launch a party that will located between SYRIZA and New Democracy on the political spectrum, according to sources.

Ex-members of Greece’s Socialist government, including Anna Diamantopoulou, Yiannis Ragousis and Giorgos Floridis, are set to work together to launch a new center-left initiative, possibly within the next couple of weeks.

In contrast to previous efforts along these lines that failed, this project will not be centered around a particular figure. Instead, the aim will be to convince PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata and To Potami chief Stavros Theodorakis to merge their parties and allow a new leader to be elected by voters.

Sources said that Theodorakis is open to the idea but wants assurances that Gennimata is also on board before he gives a firm commitment. The PASOK leader is thought to be much more skeptical about the idea. An attempt for the two parties to join forces earlier this year ended in disagreement between Theodorakis and Gennimata.
