First winter snow falls in northern Greece
Residents in many parts of Thessaloniki on Tuesday woke up to the winter’s first flurries of snow, while other parts of northern Greece, including Trikala and Florina, saw lower temperatures and ice forming on roads from the early hours of the day.
In the northern port city, the snow was mostly restricted to higher altitudes in areas like Horiati, Filyro, Melissohori, Panorama and Oraiokastro, with snowplows sent out in the early morning to clear streets.
In Florina, the traffic police warned motorists of ice on several rural roads and recommended the use of snow chains, particularly at higher altitudes.
Meteorologists have said that temperatures will drop across the country on Tuesday, with some snow even expected on the mountains around the Greek capital.
