Athens court to hear appeal against extradition of three Turkish officers

The Athens Council of Appeals Court Judges will on Tuesday hear the appeals against extradition of three of the eight Turkish military officers who fled to Greece in July following a failed coup in Turkey.

Earlier this week, the court rejected a proposal by a prosecutor for the hearing to be postponed by at least three months as Ankara has not yet provided Greek authorities with all the information they have requested.

The officers’ lawyer has repeatedly claimed they will not receive a fair trial if they are returned to Turkey, and that their lives will be at risk.

Ankara has demanded the extradition of the officers – two commanders, four captains and two sergeants – to stand trial for their alleged role in the failed coup, and for an alleged assassination attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
