Former chiefs of Athens municipal radio facing indictment

An Athens prosecutor has recommended the indictment of 15 former executives and directors at Athens 9.84 radio, run by City Hall, and one businessman on charges they wasted millions of euros in municipal funding in the period from 2003 to 2010.

The prosecutor has also asked for the parliamentary immunity of SYRIZA lawmaker Giorgos Kyritsis to be lifted.

According to the case file, an investigation revealed that the suspects approved millions of euros to cover the radio station’s expenses, which included perfumes, cufflinks, bags, belts, travel, flowers and other luxury items. The exact amount was undisclosed.

The businessman is accused of illegally receiving 1.5 million euros in municipal funds in a deal he struck with the station.
