Former school director found guilty in Giakoumakis suicide trial

An appeals court hearing the case of the 2015 death of 20-year-old Vangelis Giakoumakis, on Wednesday handed a two-year suspended sentence for negligence to a former director of a farming school in Ioannina, northwestern Greece. The court acquitted the school’s dorm head, who was also facing charges of negligence.

The former director was accused of failing to react to reports that Giakoumakis was being victimized by fellow students at the school and that the abuse led him to commit suicide.

The court also acquitted former minister Christos Markoyannakis, a New Democracy deputy, who stood accused of trying to protect the student who allegedly bullied Giakoumakis.

A prosecutor had reccommended the acquittal of all three defendants.

The former school director's lawyer said his client would appeal the suspended sentence.
