Man opens fire on police in Omonia

Police exchanged gunfire in central Omonia Square with a man “acting suspiciously” on Saturday morning, authorities said.

According to reports, the man, a foreign national, allegedly opened fire on police, injuring one officer, after refusing to stop for questioning while walking down the street.

Police said they fired back and eventually caught up with the man who is alleged to have shot himself.

The man was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation will be conducted to ascertain that the man received his injuries from the weapon he used to fire at police.

Officers also came under fire on Friday night in the Metamorphosis area of Athens from two individuals on a motorcycle.

The incident occurred as police were on the lookout for suspects in a burglary in Pefki shortly before.

The two men on the motorbike were deemed suspicious by police, but refused to stop for questioning and sped off, firing shots at the officers.

A manhunt has been launched for their arrest.
