Gov't accuses ND of condoning to lenders' hard line

As Parliament prepared to vote on a controversial government proposal for a one-off payment to pensioners ahead of Christmas, the left-led administration accused New Democracy opposition of siding with the hard line of the country’s foreign lenders.

“[Kyriakos] Mitsotakis has once again presented his credentials to the creditors,” an announcement from Maximos Mansion said Thursday in reference to the conservative chief.

“He is throwing his weight behind the IMF and the extreme circles who want to impose tough measures on society,” it said.

“There is only one, clear question: Will he choose to support low-income pensioners? He should at least stand for what he believes in, and not hide behind the IMF,” the statement said.

Earlier Thursday, New Democracy said it would vote "present" in the vote.
