Afghan murderer case prompts calls for new law

TAGS: Justice

The rape and murder in Germany earlier this year of a young student by an Afghan migrant freed from a Greek prison has spurred a debate about the shortfalls of the Greek justice system.

The affair has fueled anger in Germany, as the 19-year-old suspect was released by Greek authorities less than two years into serving a 10-year sentence for attempted murder, as part of a government initiative to free up space in Greek prisons. Germany’s Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere condemned Greek authorities for not giving the matter greater weight and called the case “exasperating.”

Experts are expressing concern about the 2015 law, saying it allows the release of inmates convicted for serious crimes.
