Frederic Rzewski | Athens | May 4

Documenta 14 presents composer and pianist Frederic Rzewski at the Athens Concert Hall on Thursday, May 4, where he will perform “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” – a set of 36 variations on the Chilean song “El pueblo unido jamas sera vencido” by Sergio Ortega.

The song is one of many written between 1969 and 1973, shortly before the ousting of Salvador Allende’s government. Rzewski composed the variations in 1975 as a tribute to the Chilean people’s struggle against the newly imposed repressive regime.

The American composer will open the concert with a performance of two pieces by Cornelius Cardew. The show starts at 8.30 p.m. and tickets cost 10 and 15 euros.
