Thessaloniki surgeon charged with murder

A 38-year-old surgeon charged with the murder of a 36-year-old Georgian woman appeared before an investigating magistrate in Thessaloniki Friday and was given an extension until Monday to prepare his defense.

The suspect is alleged to have killed the woman, a Georgian national and mother of three, on the premises of the northern port city’s Ippokrateio Hospital and to have disposed of her body in a forest in the area of Kassandra in Halkidiki.

The pair are said to have been exchanging messages on Facebook. According to sources, the doctor claims to have arranged an appointment with the woman for minor surgery, for which she did not turn up. Closed-circuit television cameras inside the hospital, however, are said to have captured the doctor acting suspiciously.

A medical examination indicated that the woman had been administered with an anaesthetic prior to her death. A coroner’s report is expected to determine the exact cause of her death.
