Ministry to reveal progress of school plan for refugees

The Education Ministry is expected to present its assessment over the coming days of a government initiative to enroll child refugees at state schools, Kathimerini understands.

Around 2,500 refugees are attending classes at a total of 115 schools across the country, according to current estimates.

However, opposition New Democracy has asked the ministry to explain why only a fraction of the target of 7,000 child refugees have been enrolled at schools and to what extent European Union funding for the project has been absorbed.

In a question submitted to the ministry last week, ND’s shadow education minister Niki Kerameos referred to “significant delays in the realization of policies” despite the allocation of EU structural funding for that purpose.

She also questioned the role in the project of NGOs which, she claimed, “are under nobody’s control” and expressed concern about the rising number of unaccompanied refugees in Greece and the lack of adequate protection for them.
