Media mistakes being repeated

COMMENT

The government’s obsession with trying to gain control over the country’s print media is truly impressive. However, it also indicates that the administration is not learning from its own mistakes and has not learnt from the mistakes made by its predecessors.

The media sector in Greece will not be cleaned up by making way for the entry of new players who either already have or are vying for public sector deals, influence or protection.

Going down this route is a way to strengthen corruption, not combat it. It will surely lead to democracy being damaged, rather than enhanced.

It must be said that the media landscape which existed in Greece previously was not without sin. However, the country will pay a very high price if there is an effort to simply replace the previous setup with something much more brutal.
