Average tax due so far is 620 euros/taxpayer

Just 5 percent of income tax declarations had been submitted up until last Friday, according to the data of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue. A total of 368,537 statements had been filled in, the majority of which require neither a rebate nor the payment of further taxes.

The processing of the declarations submitted on Taxisnet showed that 198,269, or 53.8 percent, will not entail further payments by the taxpayer or the state. Just under a third of statements (112,673 or 30.57 percent) require the payment of more tax in addition to what has already been withheld. This amounts to 69.8 million euros and averages at 620 euros for each taxpayer.

The other 57,595 taxpayers (15.63 percent) who have already submitted their declarations will have tax credit paid into their bank accounts, totaling 18 million euros. This means an average of 312 euros per taxpayer (unless they have any expired debts to the state, in which case their tax rebate will be withheld to offset their arrears).

Taxpayers must submit their declarations for 2016 incomes online by June 30. Those with more tax due will need to pay their first of three installments by July 31. The other two are due by end-September and end-November. Enterprises will this year pay their taxes in six installments, compared to eight up until last year.
