Professor indicted on arsenic poisoning charges

A judicial council in Thessaloniki Monday indicted a 45-year-old university professor on charges of killing his wife and her grandmother using arsenic poison. The man was remanded in custody until the trial.

The 85-year-old woman and her 34-year-old granddaughter, who was also a mother, died within days of each other in August 2013 at the Papanikolaou Hospital in the northern port city from arsenic poisoning, doctors said.

The suspect has denied the charges, saying both women were probably poisoned by tap water at their home in Halkidiki.
