German Interior Ministry criticized for curbing refugee family reunions from Greece

Germany’s Interior Ministry has come under fire from the left-wing opposition after a decision to bring down the number of asylum-seeking family members allowed into the country from Greece to 70 a month, Deutsche Welle reports.

According to Friday’s report, the ministry said the cap was introduced due to “limited support and accommodation capacities,” as well as logistical challenges.

The decision reportedly triggered a reaction from the Left party, with lawmaker Ulla Jelpke slamming the explanation as a “miserable excuse” and accusing the government of failing to meet EU family reunification rules under the Dublin regulation.

“The federal government is trampling all over EU law and child welfare,” Jelpke was quoted by DW as saying.
