Five arrested for scamming state out of around 1.8 mln euros

Five people have been arrested in Athens for allegedly robbing the Greek state of an estimated 1.8 million euros, police said on Thursday.

Two suspects, a man aged 41 and a woman, 47, are thought to be the brains behind the scheme of creating fake employment and insurance records at nonexistent businesses for people who actually worked at a company they owned.

Investigators are looking into an additional eight suspects, one of whom is already in prison.
