EU funds to go toward Attica waste facilities

Alternate Environment Minister Sokratis Famelos announced Wednesday that 150 million euros of available European Union funds will be used for waste management projects in Attica.

The resources will be used for the construction of waste management units at Grammatiko and Schisto, the expansion of the Recycling and Composting Plant in Fyli and waste management infrastructure on Hydra in the Saronic Gulf.

Attica is home to 35 percent of Greece’s population and produces some 40 percent of all the country’s waste. The Environment Ministry has urged municipalities to launch separate collections of biodegradable waste before the end of the year.
