No more no-go zones

Large pockets of crime and lawlessness that are no-go areas even for the country’s police officers are the product of political cowardice and an overall haphazard and hasty approach to what is in fact a very serious matter.

But the fact is that the creation of such pockets comes at a price, and often a heavy one that may – as was so tragically the case in the recent incident in Menidi – result in a loss of life.

The imposition of law and order across Greece should be another national goal that we aspire to achieve. A state simply cannot get ahead when it allows organized gangs to control entire areas and propagate the seeds of crime.

It is high time that the Greek Police was given the green light so it can finally do its job – of course it will also need assurances that it will have the political backing it needs to face any possible reactions.
