Prosecutor freezes assets of Greek businessman

Financial crimes prosecutor Panayiotis Athanasiou on Tuesday ordered that all bank accounts and assets belonging to prominent Greek businessman Fotis Bobolas be frozen.

The order was issued pending an ongoing investigation into suspected tax evasion, with reports suggesting a discrepancy of some 30 million euros over several years.

It comes just a few days after criminal charges were brought against Bobolas, employees of his Pegasus media group and three major Greek banks, which are alleged to have granted Pegasus millions of euros in loans without adequate guarantees and to have allowed the loans to remain unserviced.

They are alleged to have granted Pegasus some 160 million euros in loans in 2006 and in the period between 2013 and 2014.
