Municipal workers hold rally in downtown Athens

As trash continues to pile up in the streets of the Greek capital, the POE-OTA union representing local government workers was marching to the Interior Ministry in downtown Athens on Thursday morning to protest staff shortages.

POE-OTA called a 24-hour strike for Thursday in demand of immediate hirings at Athens and other municipalities, particularly in the sanitation department, where shortages have resulted in overflowing dumpsters.

The union also expressed its skepticism at government promises for more hirings and said that it will not tolerate the loss of fixed-term workers whose contracts expire either.
