Aristotle University senate says police has ‘open invitation’

The police have an “open invitation” to crack down on crime at Aristotle University, the Thessaloniki institution’s senate said in an announcement on Friday, accusing law enforcement of dragging its feet over claims of criminal activity on campus.

The senate’s announcement came in the wake of a letter written by 471 students at the university in the northern port city decrying widespread crime and calling for action.

“The Senate supports the initiative of the students who decided to publicly express their reaction to a problem of which everyone is aware,” it said, adding, however, that it thought the students’ claims somewhat “exaggerated.”

“The Senate calls on the Greek state to employ every form of intervention to address this criminal activity,” the body said. “There is an open invitation to the police to intervene in the areas of the university.”
