It’s no coincidence

COMMENT

There is nothing coincidental about the Culture Ministry’s constant interventions in its effort to privatize state assets.

After the old Athens airport plot at Elliniko and the Piraeus Port Authority, the ministry’s department of monuments and antiquities is now finding fault with plans by the University of Crete to concede a military building it owns in the city of Hania to a foreign tourism-related business for a very large fee.

Apparently the ministry has suddenly discovered that this building is a historic monument. Even though it has been an anarchist squat for the past 14 years and is close to collapse, the ministry has only just developed any sensitivity as regards its fate now.
