Prosecutor rejects move to prosecute privatization agency technocrats
A Supreme Court prosecutor Thursday revoked a ruling by the Council of Supreme Court Judges ordering six members of the country’s privatization agency TAIPED to face trial in connection with a sale-and-leaseback deal for 28 state-owned buildings in 2013 and 2014.
Among the six are three foreign technocrats – from Spain, Italy and Slovakia – who had been dispatched to Greece by the country’s international creditors as part of efforts to boost revenue from privatizations.
Representatives of Greece’s lenders had reacted angrily to news of the ruling, which could have imposed prison sentences on the technocrats.
The prosecutor, Haralambos Vourliotis, revoked the ruling after deeming that it had been issued on “inadequate grounds” and referred to an “an erroneous enforcement of a criminal provision.”
