Greece to investigate crowd trouble during World Cup qualifier

Deputy Minister for Sports Giorgos Vassiliadis has called on the prosecutor to launch an investigation into the crowd trouble which marred Greece’s international match against Gibraltar in Athens on Tuesday.

Video footage from Georgios Karaiskakis stadium, which is the home grounds for Greek champions Olympiakos, shows a group of fans beating and kicking a man wearing a Panathinaikos jersey before he escapes by jumping out of the stands. The two clubs are traditional rivals in all sports.

The Greek national team defeated visiting Gibraltar 4-0 to finish second in its World Cup qualifying group and advance to the play-offs in November for a ticket to the finals in Russia next summer.
