Counterfeit shoe scam busted

More than 1,300 people were swindled via Facebook by fraudsters who made more than 100,000 euros selling counterfeit brand name shoes. Four suspects, aged 62, 43, 39 and 34, have been implicated in the case and have been charged for posting misleading advertisements for brand name shoes at very low prices.

Police said the suspects managed seven different social media accounts and posed as proprietors of shoe companies based in Bulgaria and Greece.

A police investigation revealed that none of the companies exist. “From the investigation it became clear that [the suspects] swindled a total of 1,353 consumers within a six-month period, making a profit of 100,556 euros,” Greek police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The case file has been submitted to a prosecutor in Serres, northern Greece.
