University blocks party organized by anarchists

Athens University staff have blocked self-styled anarchists from using a storage room on the institution’s grounds to hold a party by turning off the electricity supply.

The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications revealed that the anarchists wanted to hold a party last Friday and intended to steal electricity from the main building through the use of an extension cable.

Academic staff told Kathimerini that the storage room has been occupied by the anarchists since December 2016. The building does not have electricity but extension cables have been used in the past to provide power, often for the hosting of parties that begin on Friday night and last more than 24 hours.

However, this time the department heads gave orders to the university’s technical staff to turn off the electricity. The official reason given for this decision was that it aimed to protect the safety of students and staff.
