Gov't figures show 2.4-bln-euro fiscal gap amid high tax rebates

Figures released by the Greek Finance Ministry on Monday showed a fiscal gap widening by around 2.4 billion euros after the government paid out record tax rebates.

According to Greek budget execution figures for the period January to September, increased tax rebates exacerbated the shortfall even as the government continues to raise levies.

In a bid to balance out the budget, the government cut state spending by 2.3 billion euros during that period.

As a result, the reduced primary surplus figure was 4.5 billion euros.
