Unrest in Athens after protest by schoolchildren hijacked by anarchists

TAGS: Protest, Education

A demonstration by schoolchildren in central Athens on Monday against cutbacks in the state education sector was hijacked by a group of self-styled anarchists who clashed with police.

The anarchists broke off from the crowd close to Syntagma Square and hurled firebombs at police who responded by firing tear gas.

Shortly before 2 a.m. the unrest spread to the entrance to Athens University and riot police units remained on standby.

Earlier in the day, thousands of pupils from schools across Atttica staged a demonstration protesting against teacher shortages and other cutbacks.
