Taxi bill raises questions

NEWS

A Transport Ministry bill aimed at regulating the taxi sector following the emergence of ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Beat is raising concerns over the true intentions of the country’s leftist-led government.

The bill was unveiled just a few days before the local taxi union is scheduled to hold elections. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis recently sided with the head of the national union of taxi drivers, Thymios Lyberopoulos, following his controversial attack on the new services.

The bill appears to introduce numerous bureaucratic and other obstacles aimed at restricting the newcomers.

Regardless of the final shape of the legislation, the current provisions certainly expose the minister’s peculiar whims.
