Bishops, nuns appeal extension of cohabitation pact to gay couples

The bishops of Piraeus, Kythira and Gortynia, as well as a group of nuns and citizens, have appealed to the Council of State against the extension of a cohabitation pact, which expands the rights of unmarried heterosexual couples, to same-sex couples.

In their appeal, the plaintiffs declared that the fact the pact also applies to gay couples is an insult to Christian ethics enshrined in the Greek Constitution.

The leftist-led government, which legislated the changes nearly two years ago, argues that the reform is not only constitutional but also commonly accepted across the European Union.
