Minimum pension for widows set at 384 euros

An amendment tabled on Thursday by the Labor Ministry in Parliament provides for a minimum pension of 384 euros per month for widows and widowers.

The move came as part of an effort to contain the dramatic cuts inflicted by a 2016 law on people who have lost their spouse in cases where the latter had paid social security contributions for at least 20 years.

According to the State General Accounting Office, the change introduced by the amendment will not cost the state any more than 20 million euros a year, while the law is expected to have saved 1.056 billion euros in total by 2021, according to the midterm fiscal plan.
