Elevator malfunctions at Thessaloniki hospital

TAGS: Thessaloniki

Four people were hurt on Friday when the cable of an elevator in Thessaloniki’s AHEPA university hospital snapped, causing the elevator cabin to plunge two floors.

The staff who had been in the elevator at the time – two nurses, a stretcher-bearer and a medical technician – sustained minor injuries in the fall.

The union representing the country’s state hospital workers issued a statement complaining that the elevators in both of AHEPA’s two hospital buildings are old and frequently malfunction.

“There is a big problem with transferring patients,” the union said. “The elevators often get stuck between floors,” it said.
