Dead wood

The hard core that supported SYRIZA before it became a political force, representing about 3 percent of the population, continues to determine government policy.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras recently adopted a very specific narrative that is centered on the need to promote investments and shift closer to the center of the political spectrum. However, both of these objectives have been undermined, whether it be with fresh objections to landmark developments or the extremely problematic handling of issues such as the temporary release of convicted terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas.

Tsipras cleared out a lot of the extreme elements of his leftist party after the controversial referendum of 2015 and now it looks like he has a lot more dead wood to get rid of but is lacking the stamina to go ahead with it. The result, though, is that both his narrative and the country are losing steam.
