Hunger-strike protest ends after two weeks

TAGS: Protest

Fourteen refugees who had been on a hunger strike for two weeks while camped on Syntagma Square in central Athens ended their action on Tuesday.

The seven men and seven women, who are demanding to be reunited with their families that are already in Germany, said they halted their hunger strike to protect their children – who were with them at Syntagma Square – from the cold, wet weather.

In a press conference on Tuesday, they said that while they have stopped their hunger strike they will continue their struggle “for our voices to be heard in Greece and in Germany.”

The refugees are calling for the acceleration of the process for them to be sent to Germany, as part of a European Union relocation scheme for refugees, describing their demands as “self-evident.”
