Strike on Athens metro to halt all service on Tuesday

TAGS: Transport, Strike

There will be no service on the Athens metro on Tuesday, as workers announced a 24-hour strike on Friday in opposition to the government’s privatization plans.

“We will not allow urban transport to be put on the selling block of profit,” the metro workers’ union, SELMA, said.

The union has also called for a meeting with Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos so it can present its demands, warning of more strike action if these are not met.

Tuesday’s all-day strike is an escalation from the three- and four-hour stoppages that have been taking place over the past couple of weeks.

The strike will affect services to and from Athens International Airport, but it was not clear whether it would also include the ISAP electric railway linking Piraeus Port to the northern suburb of Kifissia.
