Livaja comes to AEK’s rescue in Athens derby

Marko Livaja spared AEK defeat at the Athens derby with Panathinaikos at the very last minute to bring the Yellows alone on top of the Super League table on Sunday, pending Monday’s clash between PAOK and Atromitos.

The 1-1 result at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium was a fair one, as after Rodrigo Moledo headed Panathinaikos in front from the 10th minute AEK was the better team and missed three or four major chances to equalize. Yet it had to wait until the 95th minute, when unmarked Livaja received the ball from Astrit Ajdarevic to slot it home.

Panathinaikos is now joint eighth on 14 points from 11 games, while AEK is on 21, one point ahead of Atromitos and Olympiakos that also left it late to get what it deserved from its match with Levadiakos in PIraeus on Saturday.

The Reds won 2-1, goals coming from Guillaume Gillet on the 43rd and Leonardo Koutris on the 84, while Petros Giakoumakis had equalized for Levadiakos.

Xanthi has leapfrogged Panionios into fifth after beating it 2-0 at home on Sunday.

Panetolikos snatched a 1-1 draw at PAS Giannina, nine-man Kerkyra ground out the same result at Lamia, Larissa downed Apollon Smyrnis 1-0 at home and Asteras Tripolis sank bottom team Platanias Hanion further beating it 3-0 on Crete.

If host PAOK beats Atromitos on Monday it will join AEK at the Super League summit.
