Education mergers

The Education Ministry’s plan to merge technical colleges (TEI) with universities looks like an exercise in clientelist politics and vote-mongering – and it is.

Whether the plan will actually materialize or not is something we cannot know, but the ministry’s announcements to this end certainly sound very good to educators and students who are not performing very well in their academic endeavors.

TEI teachers will be able to say they are at a university, students who did not make the mark to get into university will end up with a university degree, and all together they will come out of the change with bigger demands.

In the meantime, of course, proper technical training will be pushed to the back burner, but this is not something that bothers the minister.
