Emergency funds released to repair water supply in flood-hit towns

The Interior Ministry on Friday approved the disbursement of 250,000 euros in emergency funding to repair water pipes in western Attica that were damaged in last week's deadly floods.

The flash floods that claimed 21 lives in Mandra and neighboring Nea Peramos also destroyed part of the water and sewerage network, meaning that drinking water needs to be brought into the area in bottles and many homes are without running water and at risk of health-related hazards.

The funds will come from a special account reserved for dealing with drought, the Interior Ministry said, and comes on top of 500,000 euros that was granted to the municipal authority by the government last week to help hundreds of people whose homes and businesses were destroyed.

The government is also trying to secure disaster relief funding from the European Union.
