Metro barriers remain open

TAGS: Transport

The lingering problems plaguing commuters on the capital’s metro system following the introduction of e-ticketing appear to have put authorities off activating electronic barriers across the network.

The Athens Public Transport Organization (OASA) had planned to activate barriers at all 64 stations by December 20, but so far these are operational at only four – mostly stations with low passenger traffic.

Unionists who oppose the modernization of the transit system deactivated the barriers at Aghios Antonios station on Monday by pressing an emergency alarm.

Authorities have come under fire for the long lines at metro station ticket offices due to the lack of a public information campaign as well as the failure to get new electronic ticket dispensers up and running on time.
