Discovery of body brings Mandra flood toll to 22

The death toll from the flash floods that struck Mandra earlier this month rose to 22 on Monday after firefighters helping clear mud and debris in the western Attica town discovered a body near a depot.

The body has been sent to Thriasio Hospital for identification.

Mandra is still struggling to recover from the deadly flash floods nearly two weeks ago that killed 22 people and injured dozens, while also destroying some 1,500 homes and businesses.

According to a report in Ta Nea newspaper, the only businesses currently operating in the poor coastal town are a bakery and a pharmacy. The local high school and middle school are still closed because of damage sustained in the floods, while only two of the town’s four elementary school are operational.
