As of next year, public primary school pupils will have one homework-free weekend each month, according Education Minister Costas Gavroglou.

The program has already been piloted at 25 schools and the government plans to extend it to around 4,400 around the country.

Speaking to state-run ERT TV on Tuesday, Gavroglou said that pupils will be able to leave their bags at school one Friday every month, which will allow them more free time at the weekend.

According to the ministry’s director of primary education, Giorgos Politis, taking part in the program will be optional for pupils, but juding by the experience of the pilot program this year in Attica, Crete and other parts of Greece, few choose to opt out.
